Introduction. In this article we will look at how to obtain taxonomic and geographic occurrence data from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF).Our purpose is to use GBIF data as part of a wider model for monitoring access and benefit-sharing (ABS) under the Nagoya Protocol. You can read about the wider model here. However, our focus in this article will be on the basics of gbif_citation: Get citation for datasets used: installations: Installations metadata. enumeration: Enumerations. gbifmap_list: Make a simple map to visualize GBIF point data. occ_count: Get number of occurrence records. nodes: Nodes metadata.

GBIF Secretariat Universitetsparken 15 DK-2100 Copenhagen When studies published in scientific journals make use of GBIF-mediated data, we log how they cite GBIF–i.e. either 1) using the recommended format that includes a DOI, or 2) using a more generic format (e.g. simply mentioning the GBIF.org 4 website). So how are publishers doing? The rgbif library includes a function, gbif_citation, that will help you properly cite the data downloaded from GBIF.

Community peer-review may be just a single step in GBIF’s digital documentation workflow, but it provides an important opportunity for members of the GBIF community of practice—the intended users and beneficiaries of these documents—to guide the documents' development by … We don’t often see GBIF-mediated data used in Science papers, but this week this one popped up in our literature tracking: At first glance, the only mention of GBIF is a reference to a paper about GBIF. But Science being Science, Materials and Methods is hidden away in a Supplement with this sentence: Current species distribution data were obtained from the Global Biodiversity Information In fact, if you search for eventsof papers citing GBIF-prefixed DOIs in 2018, you get 48 eventsrepresenting 27 unique articles. That’s less than a third of the papers that cite data use correctly–not to mention, less than 5 per cent of the papers that used GBIF data in 2018.
